Whitepaper series

Bio-intelligence in Additive Manufacturing

A synthesis of science, industry and policy shaping the next generation of intelligent, circular and adaptive manufacturing systems.

Where biology meets the factory floor

Biological, digital and material innovations are converging — and manufacturing will never be the same. This whitepaper series maps that convergence in full, reviewing the scientific, industrial and policy initiatives that are actively reshaping how things are made.

From the limits of conventional additive manufacturing to the promise of bio-inspired design, each publication builds toward a coherent roadmap: one that is intelligent, circular and adaptive by design.

Grounded in the European Horizon Europe Twin Transition framework, the series situates cutting-edge research within a real-world policy and industrial context — making it essential reading for engineers, researchers, policymakers and innovators alike.

Four Publications · A complete roadmap, paper by paper

1 — Context & Scene-Setting The case for sustainable manufacturing and regenerative design

2 — Barriers & Gaps Why conventional additive manufacturing is limited — and what it’s missing

3 — Methods & Value Integrating bio-inspiration and bio-based materials into AM

4 — Roadmap & Scale-Up Strategies for industrial adoption of bio-intelligent AM technologies

Brought to you by the ORGANIC Project

ORGANIC is an EU-funded research initiative dedicated to accelerating the biological transformation of additive manufacturing. Its mission is to integrate bio-design, bio-based materials and bio-intelligent manufacturing into Fused Granulate Fabrication (FGF) — a highly scalable additive manufacturing technology with significant industrial potential.

By bridging fundamental research with practical application, ORGANIC is demonstrating that the shift toward sustainable, regenerative manufacturing is not a distant ambition — it is an engineering challenge being solved today.

This whitepaper series is a direct output of that work: a resource for scientists, industry partners and policymakers who share a stake in how manufacturing evolves.

Whitepaper 1 of 4 is available now

The first publication sets the scene — exploring why sustainable manufacturing matters, what bio-intelligence offers and how it is positioned in additive manufacturing.
